Animal Care Technician

Galveston County Health District is seeking dedicated Animal Care Technician's to join our team! In this role, you will provide essential care and maintenance for animals in accordance with the latest Animal Services Interlocal Agreement guidelines.

What You’ll Do:

  • Provide daily care, feeding, and handling of animals while ensuring a clean and safe environment
  • Perform euthanasia and document drug usage per policy
  • Maintain shelter supply inventory and notify management when restocking is needed
  • Assist with cremation and maintenance services as required
  • Microchip both shelter and public animals safely
  • Receive animals from the public and complete necessary paperwork
  • Assist in photographing animals and entering data into the animal services database
  • Educate the public on animal regulations and shelter policies
  • Ensure citizen and volunteer safety while in the shelter
  • Provide enrichment activities for animals, including leash walks, playgroups, and stress-reducing activities
  • Support disease prevention protocols and safe animal handling practices
  • Cross-train with administrative staff and perform additional duties as assigned

What We’re Looking For:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum 6+ months working with animals or in animal control
  • Experience handling large and aggressive animals, using various control equipment (catch poles, leashes, muzzles, traps), and administering injections is preferred
  • Prior work in an animal shelter and knowledge of proper cleaning procedures and contamination control is preferred
  • Current euthanasia certification preferred or must be obtained within 6 months of employment
  • Current certification as a Basic Animal Control Officer preferred
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License or ability to obtain one
  • Ability to provide reliable transportation without depending on company vehicles
  • Customer service-oriented with strong communication skills
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office & data entry systems
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and flexible hours as needed
  • Compliance with GCHD immunization & ICS training policies
  • Must pass a criminal background check and drug/alcohol screening

Equivalent education and experience will be considered.
