The Galveston County Health District is seeking a detail-oriented and dependable Accountant to join our Accounting team. This role is responsible for a wide range of accounting and financial reporting duties that directly support the District’s operations and fiscal responsibility.

Reconcile bank accounts monthly and monitor cash balances across operational and payroll accounts.
Prepare and post journal entries to ensure accuracy of general ledger activity.
Support monthly balance sheet reconciliations and financial reporting.
Maintain fixed asset inventory and support quarterly and annual reporting processes.
Perform permit billing and insurance reconciliation functions.
Act as backup support for Accounts Payable, Payroll, and other accounting functions.
Provide audit support and assist with annual year-end financial close.
Assist with budget tracking, training coordination, and compliance with grant-related asset management.
Participate in special projects and department-wide initiatives as assigned.
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business (required).
Minimum 3+ years of hands-on accounting experience.
Strong working knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting standards.
High proficiency in Microsoft Excel (required).
Experience in government, public health, or medical finance settings (preferred).
Familiarity with accounting systems like Sage and AccuFund are a plus.
CPA or MBA preferred (or partial CPA completion).
Ability to work independently, manage priorities, and meet deadlines.
Clear, professional written and verbal communication skills.
Customer service orientation with a commitment to internal and external collaboration.
Valid Texas driver’s license or ability to obtain one.
Must pass background check and drug/alcohol screening.
Must comply with GCHD immunization and ICS training requirements.
Willingness to support emergency response efforts after hours, if needed.
